I’m genuinely tired of this boogeyman that certain supporters of feminism on tumblr have created of the person that disagrees with their ideals, which is that of the “obese, neck-bearded, fedora-wearing, unwashed ‘mens rights activist.’”
All they’re doing is cutting off people from ever taking their arguments seriously. How does one expect to argue for something as serious as equal rights when instead of discussing and debating facts, you come off as hostile, call them names and make ad hominem attacks?
It just boggles my mind that they throw out these insults, and then turn right around and wonder why almost no one wants to support their cause.
All these types of users do is reaffirm my personal belief that some subjects (mainly religion and politics as well as sexuality) just should not be discussed on the Internet because the vast majority of users on either side of the debate for any such “hot-button” topics are flat-out not ready to discuss it in an orderly and mature fashion.
Instead, these certain users just want to mock people they don’t see eye-to-eye with as a way to boost up their own ego, while setting up an echo chamber in which they can circle jerk each other to their own set of one-sided opinions. Which is rather disappointing, since I really do enjoy a good, cool-headed debate about the aspect of equal rights for everyone… but they seem to be in short supply these days.
